From history

It starts at the kitchen table

In Japan’s boom years, housewives begin investing their families’ hard-earned money in the financial markets. Individuals become a movement that is soon known as “Mrs. Watanabe”. Their tools: curiosity, an abacus and the will to understand.

Lesson 01

What is a blockchain?

A shared ledger that nobody owns alone. New entries are bundled into blocks; each block locks into the one before – like a Japanese wood joint. Change an old block and you break the whole chain.

  2. [B]Immutable

Lesson 03 · 1990

The bubble bursts. They stay.

When Japan’s economic bubble bursts, the Mrs. Watanabes don’t give up. They adapt their strategies and shift their focus to the currency market.

Bitcoin has a fixed cap of 21 million. Roughly every four years, the rate of new issuance halves (the halving). If you understand cycles, you invest more calmly – for example with regular amounts (DCA).

Mechanics that run by themselves

With the internet, Mrs. Watanabe’s influence goes global: her trading moves exchange rates around the world.

Today, Ethereum brings programs onto the blockchain. Smart contracts carry out agreements automatically – like a karakuri doll that sets off as soon as the tea bowl is placed on its tray.

Lesson 05 · New

Real assets become divisible

From 1730, merchants at the Dōjima Rice Exchange in Osaka traded rice tickets instead of sacks of rice – one of the world’s first futures markets.

Tokenisation carries this idea forward: property, gold or receivables become digital shares, recorded transparently on the blockchain.
